L’orso bianco invece,  o orso polare (Ursus maritimus),  non viene conteggiato fra gli animali europei,  poiche’ vive solamente nelle regioni artiche.  Quindi:  non ci sono orsi polari in Finlandia,  se non negli zoo,  come ad esempio a Ranua.

L’orso bianco e’ ancora piu’ grande dell’orso bruno: raggiunge gli 800kg di peso.   Non staro’ a raccontarvi che vive sulla banchisa polare,  che caccia preferibilmente foche e che la sua specie e’ in pericolo a causa del riscaldamento globale,  perche’ queste cose le sapete gia’.  Vi ricordo solo che a differenza dell’orso bruno,  l’orso polare non va in letargo,  anzi:  la stagione piu’ proficua per la caccia e quindi per l’alimentazione e’ proprio l’inverno,  quando almeno la banchisa polare e’ solida.  In estate poi deve sfruttare le riserve di grasso accumulate.

CURIOSITA’:  Come dicevo nel post precedente,  “orso” in finnico si dice karhu,  che e’ anche una famosa marca di birra.

E lui?  Come definirlo?  Il gigante dai piedi d’argilla dell’Artico.

(Polar)  Bears of Ranua.

The Polar bear instead,  or white bear (Ursus maritimus),  is not in the count of European animals,  as it lives only in the Arctic region.  Therefore…there are no Polar bears in Finland,  except in zoos,  as in Ranua.

Polar bears are even bigger than Brown bears :  they can reach 800kg.  As you know so well,  Polar bears live on the sea ice,  their food consists primarily in seals,  which they hunt very skillfully.  I will not tell you that Polar bears are kind of giants with feet of clay,  as the species is threatened by the global warming,  because you know it so well too;  I will just remind you that unlike Brown bears they do not hibernate in wintertime;  on the contrary:  winter is the best season for hunting and getting the necessary fat supply,  as the sea ice is stable.  In summer they will survive with that.

A FUN FACT:  As I told in the former post,  “bear” in Finnish is karhu,  which is also a famous brand of beer.

    I love the Polar bears, we have seen them here in the Maryland Zoo. It is interesting they share a name with a beer.

  24. The polar bears are such beautiful animals, but did not know they are bigger than the brown bears, and they do not hibernate in winter! So I wonder how they live in summer (do they migrate more North?) Interesting post for All Seasons! Have a great week, Jesh

  29. Si…capisco quello che vuoi dire. Ma pensa anche a come noi umani trattiamo gli animali domestici: prendiamo un gatto, lo imprigioniamo nelle nostre case, lo castriamo perhce’ non fugga, gli facciamo mangiare quello che decidiamo noi sia meglio per lui…di sicuro in natura le cose sarebbero diverse… o no? 🙂

  30. Nn è permettimi un buon paragone e proprio cosi: il cane il gatto. gli animali da lavoro sono ho cresciuti con l’uomo; il cane e il gatto non soffrono per mancanza di spazio purchessiano amati.
    Questo sarebbe un discorso interessante ma purtroppo come molti è difficile da portare avanti In questi brevi botta e risposta.
    Grazie comunque per avermi fatto soffermare sul problema.

  31. Si…sono discorsi che implicano molti punti di vista. Ma e’ bello condividere le varie opinioni. Ti dico comunque che anch’io ho sempre avuto gatti, tanto amati, e anche un cane. Non sono affatto contraria. Qui oggi siamo a zero gradi…speriamo non si sciolga tutta la bella neve bianca! Buona giornata anche a te! 🙂
