Tra Italia e Finlandia

Cari lettori,  oggi vi porto direttamente a casa di Babbo Natale!

La residenza di Babbo Natale si trova poco fuori Rovaniemi,  proprio sul circolo polare artico e si chiama giustamente:  Santa Claus Village.  Nato come piccolo centro commerciale con pochi negozi che vendevano artigianato,  un paio di caffetterie,  l’ufficio postale e la casetta vera e propria del Babbo,  negli anni si e’ ingrandito,  grazie al successo turistico e adesso ospita molti negozi,  ristoranti,  bar,  chioschi all’aperto,  nonche’ un parco divertimenti sotterraneo e la stazione di partenza dei tour con slitte trainate dai cani,  con tanto di Husky park.

Solitamente e’ sempre aperto.  Purtroppo quest’anno gran parte dei padiglioni sono chiusi,  ma il trend di visitatori e’ in crescita:  nel 2019 oltre tre milioni di turisti hanno passato almeno una notte nelle strutture ricettive della Lapponia finlandese.

Una delle attrazioni piu’ suggestive per i bambini e’ senz’altro l’ufficio postale,  dove ci sono sacchi di letterine da tutto il mondo in bella mostra e dove viene messo un timbro particolare sulle cartoline che eventualmente spedirete a casa vostra da qui.  (Nelle mie foto era lo scorso settembre e l’ufficio postale era chiuso,  percio’ con uno sforzo immaginativo dovete pensare a questi luoghi stracolmi di gente e di bambini perennemente a bocca aperta).

I bassi cottage che vedete in queste foto sono tutti negozietti e posti di ristoro.  Si possono acquistare gadgets di ogni tipo ma anche manufatti artigianali,  decorazioni,  abbigliamento,  marmellate,  miele,  profumi per ambiente,  piccoli gioielli,  giocattoli,  saponi,  monili o orecchini intagliati nelle corna di renna,  coltelli da collezione…

Infine,  ultimo ma fra le priorita’ assolute dei visitatori:  l’ufficio del Babbo,  dove lo si incontra.  Arredato semplicemente ma con tutti i comfort:  il caminetto,  una slitta carica pronta a partire e la scrivania stracolma di letterine da evadere…

Il Babbo c’e’ sempre,  anche a settembre quando siamo andati noi era presente e stava lavorando nel reparto spedizioni…ma nella foto che abbiamo con lui,  sembriamo due bambini mai cresciuti,  percio’ la censuriamo.  😉

GRANDE NOVITA’:   Quest’anno in via eccezionale e’ possibile prenotare un volo e una visita al villaggio completamente in realta’ virtuale:   Finnair infatti,  che e’ la compagnia aerea ufficiale del Babbo,  ha messo in vendita dei veri e propri voli in Business class con tanto di pasti serviti a bordo,  immagini di sorvolo,  sottolineature sonore e aurora boreale.  Dopo l’atterraggio a Rovaniemi,  si attraversa il circolo polare e si va direttamente nel cottage del Babbo per incontrarlo di persona.  I voli si prenotano direttamente sul sito di Finnair,  costano 10euro e tutti i proventi andranno all’ Unicef.  Se volete far felice un bimbo…non aspettate!

Christmas with Santa.

Dear readers of mine,  today I’ll take you to Santa’s house,  at last!

As we know,  Santa lives in the Finnish Lapland and his official residence is a few kilometres away from Rovaniemi,  just on the Arctic circle.  It is called:  Santa Claus Village and is a fantastic place to visit for the old and the young. 

The village started as a mall,  with a few shops selling handicraft,  a pair of cafes,  the post office and Santa’s room,  but through the years it has enlarged,  thanks to the huge amount of visitors.  Nowadays it includes a lot of  shops,  bars and restaurants,  open-air kiosks… Even an underground amusement park and a sled safari departing station are there,  with the Husky park open  to visits as well.

Unfortunately this year several activities will be closed,  but the village success is undeniable:  in 2019 more than three million tourists had at least one night’s accommodation in Lapland.  Santa Claus Village is usually open all around the year.

The main post office is certainly one of the most visited highlights in the village.  Here are on display sackfuls of letters written to Santa by children from all over the world.  Since it is a real post-office,  you can send postcards from here with a beautiful cancellation stamped on!  (My shots were taken last September and the post-office was closed).

The row of small cottages in my photos all belong to Santa’s Village:  in them you will find shops and refreshments.  You can buy any kind of Christmas gadgets as well as handicraft products,  artifacts,  decorations,  clothing,  jams,  honey,  room fragrances,  small jewels,  toys,  scented soap,  necklaces or earrings carved in reindeer horns,  collection knives…

Last in the row but first in the list of priorities:  Santa’s Office,  where you can meet him.  It is a simple cottage,  furnished in old style but cozy:  a fireplace,  a sledge full of presents ready to depart and Santa’s desk,  covered with letters to be perused…

Santa is always there.  When we visited last September he was at work in the shipping terminal.  (Sorry!  The photo we took with him shows two too grown-up children,  so we’ll hide it  😉  ).

BREAKING NEWS:  This year it is possible to visit Santa’s village directly from your home in a virtual reality experience.  Finnair,  Santa’s official airline,  is selling tickets online for a trip there:  you will fly in a comfy Business class seat,  admire the sky below and the northern lights even with musical background,  while you are served meals.  After landing at Rovaniemi,  you will cross the Arctic circle and go to the village,  where you will meet Santa.   Flights are on sale on Finnair webpage.  They cost 10euro and the proceeds will be donated to UNICEF.  If you want to make a child happy…do not wait!
