Viaggiando in Finlandia,  vi troverete spesso a dover attraversare delle vie d’acqua.  Ricordo che la Finlandia ha 168.000 laghi,  innumerevoli fiumi e pure il mare!

Per passare le suddette vie d’acqua ci sono vari sistemi:  traghetti,  ponti e…”lossi”!

Il lossi,  (che in italiano si chiama:  traghetto a fune),  e’ semplicemente una chiatta sulla quale si sale con la propria auto/moto/bici/furgone/camion e che ci trasporta dall’altro lato del corso d’acqua.  Sempre gratuitamente.

La sua particolarita’ sta nel fatto che funziona seguendo un cavo collocato sott’acqua,  per cui ha un motore di dimensioni ridotte e non ha bisogno di spazi di manovra:  compie infatti sempre il medesimo percorso, avanti e indietro,  a volte con orario continuato,  a volte con orari prestabiliti e pubblicati,  a seconda della frequentazione.  In inglese si chiama:  cable ferry.

Sul lossi c’e’ un manovratore che non solo guida,  ma da’ la disposizione alle auto che vi salgono;  il lossi impiega in genere un paio di minuti ad attraversare un braccio di mare.  E’  senz’altro un mezzo economico per compiere una traversata e viene mantenuto in funzione nelle localita’ di vacanza,  dove i finlandesi hanno le seconde case,  cioe’ dove vi e’ maggior traffico stagionale.  

I lossi rappresentano una curiosita’ oggigiorno,  ma hanno anche una loro praticita’:  innanzitutto costruire un ponte costerebbe di piu’ e poi deturperebbe il paesaggio:  considerate che dagli stessi bracci di mare passano anche le barche a motore e a vela,  per cui un ponte dovrebbe essere levatotio o altissimo.

The Lossi.

When you travel in Finland,  sooner or later you will have to cross a waterway:  Finland has 168,000 lakes,  many rivers and the sea!

In order to cross a waterway there are a few systems:  ferries,  bridges and…”lossi”!

The lossi is nothing but a cable ferry onto which you drive by your car/bike/truck/van and will take you to the other side in a few minutes.  It works following an underwater cable,  so it does have but a small engine and does not need much space to manoeuvre.  It operates back and forth the same place (sometimes continuously sometimes with a public timetable) and it is always free of charge.

The operator who drives the lossi will give you directions on how and where to park your car.  Nowadays the lossi may be a curiosity,  but no doubt this is an economical means of transportation:  building a bridge would cost so much more and it should be a drawbridge,  if you consider the traffic of motorboats and sailing ships in the same waterway,  or it should be very high and it would destroy the surrounding landscape.  The lossi is in fact kept going in places where Finns have their summer cottages,  that is where car traffic is mostly seasonal.

  1. These cable ferries certainly help you get around! I expect they have to be maintained so I’m sure you’re grateful for those workers who look after them and organise the crossings to another island. Very interesting.

  25. My aunt had a summer cottage in a Saimaa island when I was a child. Now there is a bridge, biut then a ferry of this kind. At Juhannus / Midsummer there were a loooooong queue!
