La Lapponia,  in finnico:  Lappi,  va più propriamente chiamata:  terra dei Sami,  la popolazione che la abita da secoli e che vi si è stabilita seguendo gli spostamento delle renne.  Per quanto riguarda l’Europa,  questo territorio,  nato senza confini,  si estende dal nord Norvegia al nord Russia,  esattamente tutta la fascia di continente ad di sopra del Circolo Polare Artico.  Più ad est inizia l’Asia.

Come dicevo,  l’etnia Sami è indigena di questo territorio e nel corso della storia ha vissuto qui spostandosi liberamente per seguire i propri allevamenti di greggi di renne,  come i nativi americani seguivano i bisonti;  solo nel secolo XX si sono stabiliti i confini degli stati Norvegia,  Svezia,  Finlandia e Russia cui appartiene il territorio.  Tuttavia i Sami hanno continuato a godere di una certa autonomia linguistica ed amministrativa.

In questo post parliamo della Lapponia finlandese.  Vi propongo alcune immagini del suo territorio sconfinato e scarsamente abitato,  dove le temperature invernali sono sottozero da novembre ad aprile per cui la vegetazione è composta principalmente da abeti e pini,  mentre le betulle sono poco più che cespugli;  le temperature estive possono sfiorare i 25 gradi ed oltre per qualche breve periodo.  Altra caratteristica del territorio lappone che salta all’occhio subito:  le foreste hanno grandi estensioni,  ma vi si trovano anche paludi e acquitrini,  resti di acqua non ancora riassorbita dall’ultima glaciazione.

Pictures of Lapland.       

Lapland,  in Finnish:  Lappi,  is more properly called:  the land of the Sami people,  as they are indigenous of this territory and have lived here for centuries.  They arrived to this northernmost region following the herds of reindeers,  as well as the American natives followed buffalos.  Lapland extends from north Norway to north Russia,  as far as Europe is concerned,  covering the portion of continent north of the Arctic Circle – after that Asia starts.

Lapland has been a borderless region for centuries and Sami people moved freely in it;  only in the twentieth century state borders were established,  therefore now we distinguish Norwegian,  Swedish,  Finnish and Russian Lapland.  In spite of that,  Sami people still enjoy a certain amount of autonomy:  they keep their own language and administration.

In this post we will consider just Finnish Lapland.  I am sharing with you views of this enormous and scarcely inhabited territory,  where winter temperatures may be below zero (32F) from November to April and summer temperatures can reach 25C (77F) or more.  Its vegetation is mostly composed of pines and spruces,  while birches are a bit more than bushes.  Lapland is greatly covered with forests,  but you will find lots of bogs and marshes too:  wet areas which have not dried up since the latest ice age yet.

As you can guess,  this is just the first post of a series about Lapland.  More to follow!

  27. Io ho tante idee di viaggi, non turistici, ma siccome faccio delle terapie mediche non saprei come fare a rimanere lontana dall’Italia per lunghi periodi. Infatti mi è capitato tempo fa di essere in Olanda e di aver finito delle pillole molto importanti per la mia salute. Ebbene ho dovuto pagare 100 euro da un dottore olandese per avere 3 pillole contate fino al giorno della partenza. Qui di mi chiedo se avessi voluto restarmi là magari come avrei potuto fare? 😐

  31. Il mio problema è che non posso fare scorta di farmaci perchè il mio dottore può fare solo 1 ricetta per ogni farmaco. Se mi fermassi per più tempo in un posto non avrei abbastanza farmaci. E non sto parlando di tachipirna o momendol ma di farmaci importanti ed essenziali per me. Io vorrei sapere se c’è qualcuno che viaggia prendendo farmaci e come fa. Anche rimanendo in Europa ho dovuto pagare caro solo per farmi scrivere una ricetta. Allora a che serve l’Unione Europea? È assurdo e mi sento più limitata di un disabile ( con tutto il rispetto per i disabili) perchè se non prendo dei farmaci rischio la vita e all’estero non li trovo. 😐

    What a great post presenting my favorite part of Finland – Lapland! We spent our vacation very near to Lapland and visited there of course. On the summer cottage which we rent we saw a reindeer family. Reindeer are cute, curious and wise animals. Thank you.

    Well, reindeer are half-wild animals and cows are domestic animal. Reindeer learn what they are taught, like pulling a sled in a race, but cows don’t.

    I have visited to this race few times and once participated in it. Feeling was as great as driving fast (my record 242km/h) on German highway (Autobahn).
