In giro, di notte, per Mikkeli.

Arrivati nel tardo pomeriggio a Mikkeli,  citta’ del sud-est Finlandia a ridosso della zona dei laghi,  dopo aver cenato ci siamo fatti un giretto in centro.  Era inizio luglio e il sole non era ancora tramontato,  nonostante fosse praticamente notte:  le 21.40. 

Abbiamo camminato nel giardino attorno al Duomo (foto qui sopra)  e al Municipio,  qui sotto…

…nella piazza del mercato,  ovviamente chiusa dato l’orario,  ci e’ stato regalato un inaspettato arcobaleno:  non era piovuto, ma le nubi erano molto intense in una parte del cielo.

Mikkeli,  la cui pronuncia esatta richiede di far cadere l’accento sulla prima “i”,  e’ una citta’ di 53.000 abitanti e come dicevo e’ collocata nella regione dei laghi e piu’ precisamente nel Savo.  Qui il paesaggio e’ stupendo,  perche’ e’ tutta un’alternanza di terra e acqua:  dagli ampi orizzonti e molto rilassante.  Mikkeli riveste anche una certa importanza storica,  essendo stata il quartier generale dell’esercito finlandese durante la seconda guerra mondiale e la guerra d’inverno contro la Russia. 

Qui in Finlandia quando si parla di regioni si intende dal punto di vista puramente  geografico,  storico,  culturale:  l’amministrazione del territorio e’ infatti in mano ai Comuni ed allo Stato;  non intervengono enti come le nostre regioni o province.  Se ne evince una burocrazia piu’ snella,  minori costi,  competenze piu’ chiare…

Continuando il nostro giro abbiamo visto altri edifici del centro:  il rinomato gastro-pub Eino…

…e naturalmente le abitazioni private,  che ho fotografato per mostrarvi l’edilizia che si puo’ trovare qui in Finlandia nei centri cittadini…

…come ad esempio la villetta qui sopra:  dalle forme un po’ austere,  forse ricavata da un edificio tipo loft precedente.

Nei numerosi giardini dei centri citta’ in Finlandia e’ sempre possibile incontrare animali piu- o meno selvatici che girano di notte:  oops… una lepre.

Infine,  un grazioso monumento con due bambini sull’altalena,  che dedico senza dubbio all’amico blogger Romolo,  con un saluto.

A Walk through Mikkeli at Night.

Our arrival in Mikkeli was in the late afternoon and after dinner we went out for a walk through the city centre.  It was the beginning of July and the sun was not setting yet,  although it was already night:  9.40 p.m.  Mikkeli (which correct pronunciation requires to stress the first “i” letter),  is a 53,000 inhabitants town in south-east Finland,  in the part of the lake district.   Here the landscape is particularly charming,  as it offers wide horizons and the alternation of land and water:  very relaxing.

The part of Finland where Mikkeli is located is called Savo.  Here in Finland regions exist merely from the geographical,  historical or cultural point of view:  the territory administration is in charge of the single Municipalities and the State.  Hence less bureaucracy and lower costs.

We started our walk at the Cathedral and then passed the Town Hall. Mikkeli is also historically important,  as it hosted the headquarters of the Finnish armed forces during WW2 and the Winter war against Russia.

When we arrived to the market square,  of course closed,  the sky showed a beautiful rainbow:  there was no recent rain but clouds were thick and dark towards east.

The next views of Mikkeli are:  gastro-pub Eino in the centre and a few private houses,  which I photographed just to show you the building style.  For instance this cool villa:  probably a refurbished loft,  given its sober appearance.

In the numerous gardens of the town centres in Finland it is always possible to meet half wild critters:  oops… a hare.

Finally,  an artful monument with two children swaying on a swing;  I will dedicate it to my blog-friend Romolo.

  7. I think you must be on holiday? The town looks pleasant and probably a relaxing place with the lakes close by. It’s interesting to see the hare coming into town. Wild animals have been venturing into quieter built up areas here also because of less traffic. As the traffic gets heavier they’ll retreat back into the countryside.
