Un museo nuovo. (part 1)

Nel cuore di Helsinki,  più precisamente lungo la Mannerheimintie,  arteria  centralissima della città,  nell’estate 2018 ha aperto un museo nuovissimo e architettonicamente piuttosto interessante ed insolito.  E’ stato chiamato Amos Rex,  una crasi tra il nome del suo fondatore,  il magnate Amos Andersson e quello di un cinema presente nella stessa area:  Bio Rex.

Il museo occupa un’area di 13.000 mq,  sviluppati su tre piani,  di cui uno totalmente sotterraneo.  Ai piani superiori si trovano l’entrata e gli uffici amministrativi;  inoltre una caffetteria-ristorante e il preesistente cinema trasformato in una sala da congressi/auditorium.  L’intera struttura è in realtà il riadattamento di un museo preesistente,  aperto negli anni ’60 per esporre la collezione Andersson;  nel 2018 è stato allargato occupando anche il cinema e una struttura sotterranea:  ora vi trovano spazio anche mostre ed installazioni temporanee.

La parte più interessante è senz’altro l’estensione sotterranea,  che è la vera e propria area museale e che è stata ricavata negli spazi di una ex stazione degli autobus.  In questa parte,  gli architetti del gruppo JKMM Architects,  incaricati del restauro,  hanno dato il meglio,  creando uno spazio accogliente,  insonorizzato e curioso:  le finestre da cui prende luce infatti sono questi enormi camini che ricordano vagamente gli oblò di una nave.  All’esterno la pavimentazione della piazza è piacevolmente ondulata,  all’interno l’arredamento è in stile funzionale,  in armonia con le strutture preesistenti.

A brand new Museum (part 1).

In the heart of Helsinki,  along the main boulevard Mannerheimintie,  a new museum is open since 2018.  They named it Amos Rex:   a crasis between the names of its founder,  magnate Amos Andersson and a  pre-existing cinema called Bio Rex.   For its peculiar appearance,  this new museum is very interesting from the architectural point of view.

The whole complex is actually the result of merging the former Andersson Art Museum,  open in the 1960’s to showcase the Andersson collection with the Bio Rex cinema and a subterranean former bus station.  Amos Rex Museum currently occupies a 13,000 square metres area in a functionalist-style three-storey premise.  The ground floor accommodates the main entrance,  the administration offices,  besides the museum cafeteria-restaurant;   on the first floor the former cinema is now an auditorium/congress hall.  

The most interesting part is no doubt the underground expansion,  where JKMM Architects group expressed their creativity.  Inside,  the gallery space is smart and cozy,  noise-free and perfect for any kind of exibitions or installations;  it is furnished in functionalist style,  harmoniously blending with the pre-existent structures.   Outside,  the surface is gently ondulated and its windows,  the funnel-shaped skylights in my shots,  remind a ship portholes.

In my parting shots:  reflections of Amos Rex Museum into its own windows and a group of enthusiast young men who did not resist from taking a selfie with the stunning structure.

    Thank you presenting Amos Rex. We have not visited it, maybe someday. Because my wife has started to learn Italian, we have watched every evening 15-20 minutes L’eredità (Rai 1). Yesterday we notice for the first time, that there was no audience there. This must have been due to Coronavirus.

    I do not know, if you follow Coronavirus cases daily, but we do. The best information is here:

  22. Yes, I got your comment back from the spam. I also watch l’Eredità (I like to test my culture and promptness) and the audience has disappeared due to virus outbreak. Soon they will cancel the program, anyway, as they did with other programs, because the people cannot travel. They will give uusinta…

  25. i enjoy museums, it is always nice to visit a new one with new, fresh ideas. your pictures are beautiful, the structures there in the outskirts are very creative!!
