Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto:

Febbraio 2020 e’ stato un mese incredibile:  qui nella Finlandia meridionale restera’ negli annali come il primo febbraio della storia senza neve!  Abbiamo infatti avuto qualche precipitazione nevosa,  ma il deposito di qualche centimetro si scioglieva prontamente entro pochi giorni a causa del rialzo termico.  Non si e’ potuti andare a sciare o a pattinare sul lago gelato!  Anche il freddo intenso e’ mancato e cio’ ha provocato scompensi in natura:  ad esempio gli animali selvatici hanno avuto difficolta’ ad andare in letargo,  compresi quelli nei bioparchi (fonte: HS);  batteri e parassiti delle piante non sono stati sterminati,  come succede di solito in questa stagione;  praticamente e’ stato un lungo novembre…

Sul fronte economico,  immaginate che le ditte di rimozione neve sono rimaste per lo piu’ inattive;  mancando il ghiaccio,  l’asfalto delle strade è stato “mangiato” maggiormente dagli pneumatici chiodati che usiamo.  D’altra parte le strade erano meno pericolosamente scivolose e abbiamo speso meno di riscaldamento.

Un discorso interessante che abbiamo sentito per radio e’ il seguente:  la lepre artica,  animale che d’inverno muta il colore della pelliccia in un bianco totale,  non ha potuto mimetizzarsi a causa della mancanza di neve,  per cui e’ stata maggiormente avvistata dai predatori;  cio’ non vale per altri animali come donnole o ermellini, i quali,  pur diventando anch’essi bianchi,  sono essi stessi predatori carnivori ed hanno piu’ possibilita’ di sopravvivenza.  (Fonte:  YLE radio).

In nord Italia abbiamo avuto tante belle giornate soleggiate,  anche qui senza freddo intenso. La neve per fortuna sulle Alpi e sulle Dolomiti non e’ mancata:  in questo caso possiamo affermare che l’inverno e’ stato piu’ anomalo qui nel nord Europa,  che al sud.

Un recente rapporto di Federalberghi dice che nel 2018 il numero di turisti cinesi in giro per il mondo e’ stato di 180 milioni di persone e si ipotizza un danno enorme all’industria turistica a causa del blocco dei viaggi dovuto alla paura del nuovo virus;  ebbene,  vorrei ricordare che anche la Finlandia e’ fra le mete frequentate dai turisti cinesi:  la Lapponia e il  mito delle aurore boreali ad esempio attirano grandi numeri ogni anno.  Inoltre i prodotti di design e accessori per la casa sono molto acquistati.  Questo per non parlare dei danni all’industria turistica italiana,  le cui conseguenze sono sotto gli occhi di tutti.

A month in my photos:

February was incredible here in south Finland:  the first time in history without snow!  We had snow precipitations but it soon melted due to the rising of temperatures.  We could not believe our eyes:  we could’t go skiing or skating on the frozen lake!  In fact the usual intense cold winter weather did not come at all and nature was quite upset:  wild animals had problems with their winter hibernation,  including the ones in the zoo (source:  HS);   insects and bugs were not killed by the winter frost,  as should happen;  it was like a long November…

From the economical point of view,   this winter local snow-clearing companies were mostly unemployed and road asphalt got worn out more than usual because of the winter tyres we use.  On the contrary,  surfaces were seldom slippery and we spent a bit less for house-heating.

Another interesting aspect about wildlife:  the arctic hare which turns totally white in winter had less possibilities to disappear due to lack of snow and more possibilities to be seen by predators;  but carnivorous animals like the least-weasel or the ermine had more chances to survive being themselves predators and very strong ones.  (Source:  YLE radio).

In Italy we had many sunny days without wintery cold;  luckily there was enough snow in the Alps and Dolomites.  All in all,  this winter the climate change has been enormously more in the north of Europe than in the south.

I happened to hear a report made by the Italian Hotels Association:  the number of total Chinese tourists travelling worldwide in 2018 was 180 million.  This year the economic impact of the new virus outbreak will be conspicuous,  as trips to and from China are practically blocked.  In particular the tourism industry will be impacted.  I would like to remind that not only Italy is a favourite destination to Chinese tourists,  but also Finland:  the fascination of Lapland with its Northern Lights is very attractive,  as well as the Finnish design objects.

A fun fact:  the new Seat Ateca ad going on in the Italian tv in this period is read in Finnish language;   of course it is incomprehensible to Italian spectators,  but the leading voice then says:  some things are self explanatory!  😉
