Il piccolo villaggio di Fiskars è una delle mete che senz’altro consiglierei di visitare ai turisti italiani in Finlandia:  perchè sulle vestigia di un insediamento industriale è stato ricavato un sito ad alto interesse panoramico ed artistico.

Situato nell’estremo sud della Finlandia,  ad un’ottantina di km da Somero e ad un’ora di auto da Helsinki,  il villaggio di Fiskars come sito industriale nasce nel 1649,  con l’insediamento di una società tedesca di lavorazione del ferro e rame.  Attorno alle officine siderurgiche naturalmente si trovavano le abitazioni dei lavoratori,  il tutto inserito in un contesto naturalistico piacevole, con tante vie d’acqua – che poi sono le stesse che hanno favorito lo sviluppo industriale,  fornendo l’energia.

L’attività industriale (pur con cambi di proprietà)  è proseguita fino alla metà del secolo scorso,  quando Fiskars è stato riconvertito in sito di interesse post-industriale e turistico.  Gli edifici presenti in loco sono stati trasformati  in laboratori artistici e fucine di idee,  con annessi negozi e posti di ristoro.   Oggi il villaggio è una meta per giovani designers,  pittori,  scultori,  grafici… (molti vi abitano stabilmente) e turisti interessati alla creazione artistica a vari livelli.

Fiskars Village.     

The small village of Fiskars is a place I do highly recommend foreign tourists to visit,  as it has become nowadays an art workshop out of its industrial past.

Fiskars is located in south Finland,  at about 80km from Somero and an hour’s drive from Helsinki.  The earliest industrial site was founded in 1649,  when a German company started  copper- and ironworks there.  After the factories,  also the living places of workers are an essential part of the site:  they have also come to a new life nowadays.  The area also boasts numerous waterways (essential to power the factories in the past),  making it a relaxing context to visit.

The ironwork activity in Fiskars lasted (although owners changed) until the mid-1900’s,  when the small town was converted into a post-industrial point of interest.  Now a real community of artisans,  designers and artists lives and works there:  all the buildings were renovated to host their exibitions,  besides an interesting museum on ironworks.  In Fiskars the visitor will find workshops and shops,  activities suitable for children and families,  refreshing cafeterias and even rooms to let in a pretty hotel:  www.wardshus.fi/en/

This summer in Fiskars the first Art&Design biennale is taking place,  as you can read in the link below,  asserting the role of outstanding forge of ideas Fiskars wants to represent in south Finland.

  12. Generalmente i laghi finlandesi sono tutti balneabili dal punto di vista della qualita’ delle acque. Per quanto riguarda le temperature, dipende dai gusti: ad esempio a luglio con 34 gradi pomeridiani un bagnetto si faceva volentieri, adesso ce ne sono 20…un po’ diverso. Ma il trucco dei finnici e’ scaldarsi bene prima con una robusta sauna! Dopodiche’ si immergono anche in inverno… 😉

  34. Such a lovely area to have a hotel here! Love the arch, and the little tower with clock above it! The long white bridge is lovely, it makes wonderful reflections on the water! Many thanks for sharing this little piece of heaven in Finland and for providing the link! for All Seasons! When I was reading Fiskars, I immediately had to think of the little art scissors with the different kinds of zigzag edges (my guess is the idea came from Finland?) Enjoy a lovely summer week!

  36. My kids and grandkids are crazy about the scissors of Fiskars:) Love you showed something everyone knows here in the USA, but does not realize where it came from!
