*please scroll down for English version*Oggi vi propongo una curiosità linguistica,  anzi:  piu’ che una curiosità,  una vera stranezza che riguarda la lingua finlandese.

Quando studiamo le lingue impariamo che in grammatica esistono i pronomi personali di genere diverso per distinguere le persone:  maschile e femminile.  Ad esempio in italiano:  lui e lei;  egli ed ella.

In Inglese e’ lo stesso:  he and she.  (It e’ per animali e cose).

In tedesco la medesima cosa:  Er und Sie (Es e’ per le cose).

In lingua finnica invece esiste solo un pronome che va usato per maschile e femminile:  la persona è sempre hän, che sia un maschio o una femmina.  (Per le cose il pronome è Se).

Ad esempio:

Hän on Risto,  minun mieheni.  (Lui è Risto, mio marito). 

Hän on Luisella,  minun vaimoni.  (Lei è Luisella,  mia moglie).

Ma i finlandesi sono contenti e dicono che la loro lingua funziona in questo modo da secoli e non è poi così facile creare fraintendimenti…

Vi lascio (perplessi?)  con una foto nella quale tutti i generi si fondono:  due stupende farfalle cavolaie che si accoppiano.

(Naturalmente questa cosa della mancanza di genere puo’ valere anche per altre lingue del nostro vasto mondo…quel che ho scritto nel post è quel che so del finlandese!)

Today I’ll share with you a fun fact about Finnish language. 

When we study languages,  we learn that in grammar there are gender personal pronouns to define people:  masculin and feminin.  In Italian:  lui and lei.

In English the personal pronouns are:  he and she.  (It is for things or animals).

In German:  Er und Sie.  (Es is for things).

In Finnish language there is actually only one pronoun.  Everybody is just hän;  for instance:  

Hän on Risto,  minun mieheni.  (He is Risto,  my husband). 

Hän on Luisella,  minun vaimoni.  (She is Luisella,  my wife).

As you can guess,  Finns are happy like that;  they claim that their language has been working like that for centuries and after all it is not so easy to create misunderstandings…

(Of course I do not know if this happens in other languages of our big world…I just wrote what I know about Finnish language!)

    Yes, sometimes I wish there were more third-person pronouns than the one in our language, but I guess having only one is a good start for gender equality. 😀

  5. It is great that the Finnish language is more simple in some aspects 🙂 We have enough of our curiosities – sijamuodot – the endings of words instead of prepositions!

  36. Italian is easy for me because it is a latin language and my mother tongue, Potuguese, is a latin language too. Hard is learning a language that is completely different to you are used. For exemple: for me Russian is difficult, but I have a polish friend and he told that for him Russian is easy becausy is similar to Polish language.
