Tra Italia e Finlandia

Naantali e’ una cittadina dell’estremo sud Finlandia,  appena fuori Turku.  Prende il suo nome da un monastero di suore svedesi dell’ordine di S. Brigida insediatosi nella zona nel XV secolo,  quando la Svezia (e la Finlandia che ne faceva parte),  era ancora cattolica.  Oggi Naantali e’ una localita’ a vocazione turistica, trovandosi sul mare ed in posizione climaticamente favorevole: vi si trovano piacevoli bar,  ristoranti,  un grazioso lungomare,  un porticciolo turistico e il pittoresco centro storico con le case interamente in legno.  Visto che siamo ancora nel periodo delle festivita’,  vi propongo una passeggiata per le vie di Naantali con le luci natalizie:  un incanto invernale.

In alto:  il mar Baltico che inizia a gelare e qui la chiesa,  che e’ luogo prescelto per moltissimi matrimoni.  Piu’ sotto:  la passeggiata a mare e gli addobbi nelle vie del piccolo centro all’ora del crepuscolo.

Ma come?  Anche a Naantali c’e’ questo Babbo Natale che si arrampica sulle finestre,  come da noi?  Merito del commercio globale… meno male che qualche addobbo originale resiste ancora:  la sfilata di Santa Lucia portatrice di luce,  come la celebrano in Svezia!  Naantali si trova infatti nell’area costiera e bilingue della Finlandia,  dove entrambe le culture convivono.

Winter Charm in Naantali.         

Naantali is a very old and charming town located in the very south of Finland,  very close to Turku.  Its name comes from the earliest inhabitants of the area:  some Swedish nuns belonging to St. Bridget of Sweden’s order,  who established their monastery here,  back in the 15th century,  when Sweden (and Finland which was part of it) was still catholic.  Nowadays Naantali is a seaside town visited by thousands of tourists,  also because it enjoys a mild climate;  there you will find cafes,  restaurants,  a beautiful promenade,  a small harbour and the old wooden houses of the town centre.   In my shots:  the winter charm of a walk through the streets of this little old town at dusk in the Christmas lights.

You can admire the partly frozen Baltic sea;  the church,  where many people choose to hold their wedding ceremony;  the seaside promenade.

By the way of Christmas decorations,  in my last shots you can find the climbing Santa even here?  It is the magic of global commerce…but luckily some traditional and original decoration still survives:  the St. Lucy parade,  as they celebrate it in Sweden.  Naantali is in fact located in the coastal bilingual area of Finland,  where both cultures coexist.
