Una cappella inaspettata.

Il turista che capita nella bella piazzetta del distretto di Kamppi,  nel centro di Helsinki,  e che magari ha poca familiarita’ con la creativita’ e il design finlandesi,  potrebbe trovarsi un po’ spaesato alla presenza di questo oggetto ligneo vagamente a forma di scodella che campeggia proprio in mezzo alla piazza…

Si tratta di una cappella di preghiera,  aperta dal 2012 a tutti coloro che desiderano fermarsi per un attimo di riflessione nel corso della giornata:  si chiama Kampin Kappeli  – La Cappella di Kamppi – e siccome e’ interessante anche come esperimento architettonico,  vale la visita anche se non si sente il bisogno di pregare. 

Progettata dagli architetti Summanen,  Sirola,  Lintula,  del gruppo K2S Architects,  e’ interamente costituita di listelli di vari tipi di legno:  abete all’esterno,  frassino e ontano.  E’ alta 11,5 metri e gestita dai servizi sociali locali,  in collaborazione con la Chiesa Luterana di Helsinki;  non vi si tengono celebrazioni religiose,  ma occasionalmente concerti.  Naturalmente ognuno e’ benvenuto!

An unexpected Chapel.        

The traveller who happens to find himself in the Kamppi district square in Helsinki may be surprised to find this odd building just in the middle of the square:  especially if that traveller is not familiar with the Finnish creativity and design…It is a chapel,  its name is:  Kampin kappeli – the Kamppi Chapel – but,  more than that,  it is a place to stop and pray or enjoy peace just in the city centre.   Opened in 2012,  is is totally made of wooden lists of three types of different trees:  spruce ouside,  ash and alder inside.  Designed by architects Summanen,  Sirola,  Lintula,  belonging to the K2S Architects group,  it is conceived as a place of tranquillity with no particular religious connotations;  it is run by the city social services in cooperation with the city Lutheran congregation and everyone is welcome!

The Chapel is 11,5 metres high and it is interesting as an architectural experiment in itself.  No regular religious services are held in the chapel,  but occasional concerts.  Unfortunately  photographing is prohibited inside,  in order not to disturb,  being the chapel very small,  therefore here is the link to its website to visit its interiors:  www.kampinkappeli.fi/index/visit_1.html

  20. The chapel design is unusual. I like the natural woods used and the way the lights shine through the wooden walls in an evening. It’s good that there is this building for prayer or for some peace and quiet time where volunteers are available if someone is in need. Buona Domenica!
