Durante una recente gitarella a Caldaro sulla Strada del vino,  Kaltern an der Weinstrasse,  perla delle Dolomiti alto-atesine incastonata fra i vigneti e il suo lago smeraldino,  entrando in un negozio d’abbigliamento di cui purtroppo non so il nome,  ci siamo sentiti apostrofare in tedesco.  Ci succede regolarmente da quelle parti,  poichè i colori di mio marito evocano una discendenza teutonica;  di solito mi limito a rispondere in italiano,  ma a volte preciso che: “Non siamo tedeschi, siamo finlandesi!”.  Quella volta la mia precisazione offrì lo spunto alle gentili titolari per parlarci del loro cugino,  Andreas Bernard,  campione di hockey su ghiaccio che vive e gioca in Finlandia!

Eccolo qui Andreas:  dopo una promettente carriera come portiere anche della Nazionale italiana,  si è trasferito da Caldaro in Finlandia;  al momento gioca nella città di Pori,  sulla costa ovest del Paese,  nella squadra degli Assi:  Porin Ässät,  nel campionato maggiore.   Ma che piccolo questo mondo,  però…!

People from Caldaro.       

Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino,  (Kaltern an der Weinstrasse),  is a small picturesque town located in the very north of Italy,  in the region Trentino-Alto Adige;  a gem,  set among its emerald lake,  the Dolomites and a sprawl of vineyards.  During our recent visit to Caldaro,  we entered a clothes’ shop and,  as it often happens due to my husband’s colours,  the shopkeepers spoke to us in German (that is a bilingual area of Italy).  Sometimes I just answer in Italian,  but sometimes I tell them:  “We are not from Germany,  we are from Finland!”

This was one of those times.  My clarification was welcome:  it gave the two kind ladies the opportunity to tell us about their young cousin:  Andreas Bernard,  an ice-hockey player from Caldaro who moved to Finland after starting his career in Italy.  Andreas is a high-level  goalkeeper;  he played in the Italian national team too,  before moving;  in this moment he is playing with the Porin Ässät hockey team,  in the city of Pori,  on the west coast of Finland,  in the major league.  Funny how this big world is so small…!

  1. Beautiful photos, and yes – the big world is small! You don’t meet every day an Italian ice-hockey player! The tennis player Andreas Seppi must be from the north too as he is so blond and speaks German…
