Vi presento,  se gia’ non la conoscete,  una farfalla unica,  anche se non rara:  la Farfalla colibrì!  (Macroglossum stellatarum). 

Conosciuta anche come Sfinge del galio o Sfinge colibrì,  ha un aspetto diverso dalle farfalle che maggiormente conosciamo:  il corpo e’ grosso e tozzo e le ali sono piccole e triangolari.  La sua particolarita’ e’ appunto di comportarsi similmente ad un colibrì,  cioè battere convulsamente e velocissimamente le ali per reggersi in aria e aspirare il nettare dai fiori con la sua spirotromba-proboscide.  Descritta così forse non sembra graziosa,  ma lo è:  ha un bel colore arancione e la velocita’ con cui batte le ali e’ sorprendente.  E’ piuttosto comune in tutta l’Eurasia e io la vedo spessissimo sul lago di Garda.

A different Butterfly.     

Today I’ll share with you some shots of a very unique butterfly,  even though not at all rare:  the Hummingbird hawk-moth  (Macroglossum stellatarum). 

It is actually  a day-flying moth.  Its aspect is totally different from many other butterflies:  its body is short and robust,  its wings are smaller and its characteristic hovering behaviour in the air make it resemble a Hummingbird.  It can move so fast its wings when feeding on flowers by its long proboscis!  Maybe my description is faulty and you think this moth is not  so charming,  but it actually is:  its wings are beautifully orange and its humming is amazing.  You can find it across all Eurasia in summer;  I often see it at lake Garda.

  11. Una farfalla molto particolare,mai vista! mi fanno visita per tutta l’estate unicamente due farfalle bianche : sono le benvenute e spero non cambino mai rotta!!
