Come immaginate tutti quanti,  cari lettori,  in Finlandia non è possibile coltivare frutta e verdure mediterranee a cielo aperto per ragioni climatiche;  ma si puo’ ovviare persino al clima con un po’ di costanza e un accessorio che vedete nelle foto sotto:  una serra!

Chi ha veramente passione per gli ortaggi e dispone di spazio in giardino,  puo’allestire una semplice serra in un punto soleggiato.  Per anticipare i tempi,  le piantine appena comprate,  ad esempio pomodori o anche delicati fiori estivi,  vanno dapprima tenute in casa nei propri contenitori,  possibilmente presso una finestra e quando la temperatura dentro la serra lo permette,  trapiantate là.  Come vedete nelle foto sopra,  ci si possono piantare perfino le patate,  per gustarle novelle,  come nella piu’ pura tradizione finlandese.

Nelle foto qui sotto,  invece,  qualche kit già pronto con tutto l’occorrente per coltivare varie verdure direttamente dal seme:  a maggior ragione vanno fatte germinare in casa e messe in serra a primavera. Con pazienza,  cura e pollice verde si possono ottenere varie colture:  dai pomodori ai cetrioli e perfino zucca!

Greenhouse Miracles.       

As you all guess,  my dear readers,  in Finland it is not possible to grow mediterranean vegetables,  e.g. tomatoes,  in the open air because of the climate.  There is just one way to do it:  you need a greenhouse.

Whoever is fond of gardening and vegetable-growing and has room in the garden,  can put up this simple accessory in a sunny corner;  in order to enjoy faster results,  the little plants of tomatoes,  for instance,  but also some delicate summer flowers,  must be kept in the home in their own containers until the temperature in the greenhouse is suitable in spring and then placed there.  As you can see in my photos,  you can grow even potatoes in a greenhouse;  many Finnish people do it,  for enjoying them as new potatoes.

In the lower series of photos,  you can see how it is possible to grow vegetables starting from the seeds:  you only need a suitable kit.  Of course the seeds must be kept in the home in early spring,  but with some care and attention you can get good results:  you can grow even your own pumpkins!

  1. I like looking at a display of seeds when visiting the garden centre just to see what varieties are available. A glasshouse is a good way to catch precious sunlight which helps plants grow. You have some lovely ripe tomatoes to enjoy!

  3. Thanks, Linda. Actually the tomatoes belong to my clever sister-in-law. We do not really have time to take care…we travel too often. But we have potatoes, strawberries, spinach, lettuce, rucola, dill. Thanks for your kind visit! 😉

  16. this is a beautiful garden…your sister-in-law’s?? the tomatoes look fabulous, i would enjoy having a green house garden but they can be a lot of work too!!
