Sulle colline sovrastanti la bella cittadina ligure di Rapallo,  si trova il Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montallegro.  Edificato a circa 600 mt di altitudine in posizione tranquilla in mezzo ai boschi,  il santuario è raggiungibile con un breve percorso in funivia proprio dal centro di Rapallo.  Il viaggio dura solo sei minuti,  ma è davvero spettacolare:  una gita rilassante da fare,  per devoti e non,  se ci si trova da quelle parti.

Il santuario fu edificato nel 1558 per glorificare un’apparizione della Vergine.  L’esterno presenta un’armoniosa facciata marmorea sulla sommita’ di un’imponente scalinata,  mentre l’interno è un trionfo di decorazioni,  marmi policromi ed affreschi.  La Madonna di Montallegro e’ la protettrice di Rapallo e la sua festa patronale si celebra ad inizio luglio.

La statua  miracolosa della Madonna fu lasciata da lei stessa come pegno d’amore per i cittadini di Rapallo.

Dal santuario si gode una vista mozzafiato sulla costa sottostante:  i profili di Rapallo,  Santa Margherita Ligure e Portofino spiccano nell’azzurrita’ del mare.  Naturalmente anche il clima lassù è più fresco e la sensazione di pace non ha eguali.  (Attorno al santuario non mancano i posti di ristoro,  per chi non avesse portato il proprio snack).

Montallegro.       

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montallegro,  located on the hills above the town of Rapallo,  in the Ligurian coast of Italy,  is not only a place of faith,  but also the final point of a relaxing day-trip for those who should spend some time there.  The sanctuary was built in 1558 to celebrate an apparition of the Virgin Mary and stands at about 600 metres high;  the best way to reach the sanctuary is a short trip by cable-car:  only six minutes but very enjoyable,  above the Ligurian woodlands.

The harmonious facade of the building,  standing upon a long staiway,  is made of white marble,  whereas the interior is decorated with frescoes by various artists,  polychrome marbles,  niches and statues.  The main statue on the main altar is Our Lady,  who is said to have left this statue Herself as a sign of love to the town of Rapallo.

From the sanctuary a wonderful view of the lower coast opens up:  the towns of Rapallo,  Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino stand out in the blue seascape.  Up there the climate is fresher and more pleasant in hot summer days and the sense of peace unequalled.  (If you do not have your own snack,  near the sanctuary you will find a few lunch places).

  5. The church and sanctuary in those beautiful surroundings would be a good place to visit for the festival in July. I expect there’s a way to get up to the sanctuary if you don’t want to use the cable car. It must be cooler up there too with gorgeous panoramic views at the top of the mountain towards the coast.

  15. What a delightful place this is, and your photos do it great justice. Next time I am in Italy, i must make a point of exploring more of Liguria. I only passed through very quicky once.
