Tra Italia e Finlandia

Cari amici,  una dritta essenziale per coloro che hanno in programma una visita in Finlandia:  sappiate che tutte le caffetterie,  pasticcerie,  snack-bar,  tavole calde,  posti di ristoro nelle stazioni di servizio o piccole pasticcerie-paninerie di paese sono self service!  Solo qualche caffè estremamente chic fa eccezione a questa regola,  come il Cafè Ekberg in centro ad Helsinki,  per il resto ci si serve da soli e si paga alla cassa.

Persino il Bulevardin kahvisalonki,  che ho preso come esempio nelle mie foto,  anch’esso sciccosissimo e situato in centro a Helsinki funziona così.  Entrando vi avvicinerete al bancone e riconoscerete il punto d’inizio dalla presenza dei vassoi;  vi armerete di vassoio e scorrendo lungo il bancone vi prenderete quello che volete:  snack dolci o salati,  torte,  panini,  bevande fredde…e alla fine dello scorrimento troverete una gentile cassiera per pagare.  Tutto e’ gia’ porzionato.  Alla cassa troverete anche le bevande calde:  il caffè (lungo,  quello che chiamiamo americano,  che potete allungare con latte o panna);  il tè (da gustare eventualmente con il latte:  il limone è inusuale) o altre cose che ci sono in lista.

Molti caffe’ hanno il bancone chiuso dalla parte del pubblico,  per cui dovete indicare alla cassiera quello che volete,  ma non preoccupatevi:  qui l’uso dell’inglese e’ diffusissimo e vi capirete senza problemi.  Una volta fatta la scelta,  pagherete alla cassa,  con contanti,  carta,  o bancomat e vi sara’ senz’altro rilasciato lo scontrino fiscale,  senza nemmeno chederlo!  Non è obbligatorio tenerlo.

Molti caffe’ sono attrezzati con macchina espresso proprio come quelle che conosciamo (e di solito sono anche di marche italiane),  per cui potete trovare cappuccino,  espresso,  latte macchiato e cioccolata.  Ovviamente potranno essere un po’ diversi dai nostri standard:  a voi il rischio della prova!  Personalmente amo molto sorseggiare il caffe’ lungo e me lo faccio anche a colazione in Italia.

Il giorno in cui ho scattato queste foto era soleggiato e splendido,  al punto che seduti ai tavoli fuori dal locale era fin troppo caldo.  I riflessi di sole attraverso le finestre creavano arcobaleni sulle stoviglie…

A proposito:  quando avete consumato il vostro snack porrete il vostro bel vassoietto su un carrello situato in un angolo del locale,  così chi verrà dopo di voi troverà il tavolo libero,  come lo avete trovato voi.

Self-Service.       

Dear friends,  there is one important aspect about the way of life in Finland that you must know if you intend to pay a visit here:  all cafeterias,  snack-bars,  confectioners,  cafes,  lunch places in gas stations have self service!  Only a few very chic places have table service:  for instance Cafe’ Ekberg in Helsinki.  Generally speaking,  you will help yourself and pay at the cash.

Even the smart Bulevardin kahvisalonki in this post,  located in the heart of the capital,  has self service.  The starting point is always where the trays are;  you will pick up your tray and help yourself with what you prefer:  salty or sweet snacks,  cakes,  donuts,  pies,  fresh beverages…  moving along the desk.  At the end you will find a kind cashier for payment.  All food is already portioned.  At the cash you will find hot beverages too:  filter coffee and milk or cream,  tea (usually with milk:  lemon is unusual here).  

In many places the glass desk is not open to the customers’ side,  in this case you will have to tell the cashier your choice;  English is largely spoken in Finland and even if your cashier shouldn’t speak,  surely you will be able to understand each other.  You can pay by credit card or bank card or cash and you will get your receipt immediately,  without asking.  It is not compulsory to keep it,  as it is in Italy.

Many cafeterias have espresso machines as well (usually Italian trademarks),  so you can get cappuccino,  latte macchiato,  chococcino or hot chocolate.  They may be different from the Italian standard:  it’s up to you to take the chance!  Personally I like to sip filter coffee (I make it for my breakfast in Italy too) and I do not miss espresso.

The day I took these photos was warm and nice and the sun raflected onto the cutlery with little rainbows… It felt even too hot to sit at the tables outside!

BTW:  when you have enjoyed your snack time enough,  before leaving you will carry your tray to the designated trolley,  so the next customers will find the table free.
