Una chiesa slanciata.

Oggi vi porto a Tampere,  citta’ situata nel sud-ovest della Finlandia,  su un istmo fra due grandi laghi in una zona ricca d’acqua.  La chiesa ultramoderna che vi voglio far conoscere e’ quella di Kaleva:  Kalevan kirkko, che si trova su una collinetta nel centro della citta’ e si staglia sul panorama circostante grazie alle sue forme ardite.  Inaugurata nel 1966 su progetto degli architetti Reima e Raili Pietilä,  la chiesa si distingue per la sua modernita’ e funzionalita’:  come si vede nelle foto,  le finestre scorrono sulla lunghezza delle pareti ed essendo molto alte donano una straordinaria luminosita’ all’interno,  peraltro consentendo la visione del verde circostante.

L’interno e’ altrettanto sorprendente:  la mancanza di colonne dona un’idea notevole di slancio verso l’alto,  come nelle antiche cattedrali gotiche che tanto bene conosciamo in Europa centrale,  ma in chiave moderna.  La chiesa misura 30 metri in altezza.

Dettagli di stile sobrio,  moderno e funzionale:  l’organo,  il pulpito,  le panche con l’alloggiamento per i libretti dei canti sacri.

Non so se le mie foto riescano a dare un’idea della luce che vi filtra:  la chiesa ha davvero un’atmosfera piacevole di ampiezza e leggerezza.

Infine,  una visione d’insieme e lo stiloso campanile.  La chiesa e’ circondata da un piccolo parco.  Spero che questo post sia piaciuto a coloro che fra di voi sono appassionati di architettura contemporanea.

An ascending church.         Today I would like to take you to Tampere,  a Finnish city located in the southwest of the country on an isthmus between two big lakes.  I would like to take you to the city centre,  in the Kaleva quarter,  where this outstanding church is located.  It is the Kaleva Church,  Kalevan kirkko,  inaugurated in 1966,  designed by architects Reima and Raili Pietilä.  It stands on a small hill dominating the surrounding landscape,  but it stands out for its modern and functional features:  its windows,  to start with:  extending from ground to roof,  they allow a lot of light to the interior and allow the vision of the surrounding green outside.

The interior is as surprising:  there are no columns at all and this gives the idea of heavenly openness,  of ascension,  as happened in the medieval gothic cathedrals,  but on a modern extent;  consider that this church is 30 metres high.

More details of sober and modern design:  the pulprit,  organ,  pews with a rational compartment for hymn booklets.

Please admire the ceiling:  a third millennium wooden one.

I hope my photos give the correct idea of lightness,  openness,  space and brightness inside the church.

Finally.  a glance at the syylish bell-tower.  The church is pleasantly surrounded by a small park.

  6. Thank you, Riitta. I liked this church at first sight! It really reminds me of the old gothic style, but on a modern base: as if somebody had to ramake the Milan Dome nowadays (or Notre Dame…). Happy Sunday!

  12. Mi ricorda molto una chiesa in cui sono stata da qualche parte in Norvegia: sobria, essenziale, senza fronzoli. Il bello dei paesi nordici è che sembra non esserci il bisogno di riempire per forza ogni spazio con una decorazione. Qui si ha una sensazione di pace e di armonia con la natura.
