All’estero l’esercito e’ impegnato solo in missioni di peacekeeping.

General Information.
Some info about Finland, in order to give a better idea of the country.
Finland occupies a territory of 338,145 square km and is inhabited by 5 million and half people, concentrated in the southern area. This large surfaced country, but small in population is located in the most eastern corner of Europe, bordered to the north by Norway, to the east by Russia and to the west by Sweden. To the south the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic sea, to the soutwest the Gulf of Bothnia form the rest of its natural borders. About one quarter of the country is located north of the Arctic circle, this area is named: Lapland.
Even though Finland is one of the world’s most northern countries, it enjoys quite a temperate climate: the Baltic sea, the inland waters and the Gulf stream-warmed airflow from the Atlantic ocean contribute to keep temperatures as much as 10 degrees higher than similar latitudes in other parts of the globe. Winters are cold and summers are mild; in particularly cold winters, temperatures can drop until -40/50 degrees C in the northern parts of the country, but in summer they can rise until 30/35 C in some regions, even though for short time. Foreigners can hardly believe this changeability.
The land is low-lying, high reliefs are missing (Halti is the highest top: 1,328 metres) and largely covered with lakes and forests. Lakes, in the number of 188,000, occupy 10% of the country and in the inland waters there are around 100,000 islands.
Forests are the first natural resource of Finland: about 1,930 million cubic metres of wood. Water and a good percentage of minerals in its bedrock are important resources too. Unlike other industrialized countries, Finland has not suffered heavy pollution or acid rain, thanks to long-term governmental programs and measures.
Finland is surrounded by monarchies, but it is itself a republic. In 2000 for the first time a woman was elected president. The system of government is parliamentary democracy. Power is exercised by the people through its representatives in a parliament where the 200 members are elected every four years. The Finnish constitution guarantees all citizens the fundamental human rights as stated in the Human Rights Declaration by the United Nations.
As far as defence is concerned, Finland is neutral; even though it owns a regularly trained army. Military service is compulsory. Finnish army has taken part to several missions of peacekeeping abroad.
The Finnish state is basically neutral about religion, although Lutheran and Orthodox religions are mentioned in the constitution. Churches enjoy the utmost independence and their financial support comes from taxes.
As far as the 1950’s agriculture was the most important economic activity in the country, producing mostly cereals. In the 1970’s only one quarter of the population was working in the agricultural environment anymore. In the 1980’s the government established a long-term plan to introduce the country to the era of new technologies, research and informatics and already at the beginning of the new millennium Finland and Sweden were occupying top positions. Finland is famous worldwide for its design, another gem in its economic production: the use of natural materials and the simple forms represented are strictly connected with nature and archaic ethnic culture.
Literacy rate is maximum; schools are cost less and compulsory from 7 through 17 years. In Finland we have about 20 universities.
Finland is a member of European Union since 1995 and part of the Schengen agreement since 2001. Euro is its currency. Its time zone is GMT plus 2 and in summer we have Summer Time. The national languages are Finnish and Swedish: many areas of the country are bilingual. Moreover, in Lapland the Sami people speak their own idiom. English speaking is very widespread.
In Finnish language the correct name for Finland is: Suomi.
One last thing to make it clear once and for all: fjords are in Norway.
