Un frutto siciliano

E’ la Mora di gelso,  (Morus nigra),  un frutto che ama  decisamente i climi caldi ma  che vive bene anche qui a Verona.  Nelle foto la pianta e le bacche a diversi stadi di maturazione.  Quando sono pronte,  qui nel nord Italia fra maggio e giugno,  le more di gelso sono dolcissime e senza parti dure,  come invece le more di rovo. 

Ho definito questo frutto “siciliano” poiche’ in quella regione se ne fa una granita da assaporare a colazione con una brioche,  ma se ne possono fare anche marmellate…

Personalmente,  spesso faccio come il merlo:  quando passo sotto un gelso mi fermo e assaggio un po’ di frutti…

A Sicilian Fruit.    

The Mulberry tree is a tall tree which lives preferably in warm climates,  but survives here at Verona as well.  Its fruits look like blackberries (Karhunvatukat),  but are so much juicier and sweeter and without those hard parts inside.  In the photos,  the berries at different steps of ripeness;  at this latitude (45N),  they are ready in May-June. 

I have called this fruit “Sicilian”,  because in that region they love to have breakfast with croissant and mulberry-syrup flavoured crushed ice (granita),  but you can use this berry to make jams too.   It is so much fun to me to do what blackbirds do:  when I pass by a mulberry-tree I stop and taste greedily some fruits…

  21. Anch’io in giardino ne ho una pianta e quando i merli golosoni me lo permettono mi intrufolo sotto i suoi rami e mi gusto questo frutto veramente dolcissimo 😋ciao ciao
