Kuu kiurusta kesään,  puoli kuuta peipposesta,  västäräkistä vähäsen,  pääskysestä ei päivääkään.

Con questa simpatica breve filastrocca,  basata sull’osservazione della natura e degli uccelli migratori,  i Finlandesi sanno predire esattamente quando inizia la bella stagione. 

Ma andiamo con ordine:  Kuu kiurusta kesään,   cioe:  “quando arrivano le Allodole manca un mese”.   (Per la cronaca, le prime allodole di solito arrivano a fine marzo).

Continuiamo:  puoli kuuta peipposesta,  cioe’:  “quando arriva il Fringuello manca mezzo mese”.

Ancora:  västäräkistä vähäsen,   cioe’:  “quando arriva il Batticoda manca poco”.

Infine:  pääskysestä ei päiväkään.   Cioe’:  “quando arrivano le Rondini,  ci siamo”.

Naturalmente l’arrivo dei migratori e’ soggetto non solo al tempo meteorologico,  ma anche alla quantita’ di cibo che troveranno qui:  le allodole arrivano presto perche’ si nutrono di semi e ne trovano sempre nei campi;  cosi’ pure i fringuelli;  ma i batticoda,  che si nutrono di larve,  devono aspettare che la terra si sgeli,  prima di arrivare.  Lo stesso vale per le rondini che mangiano insetti e zanzare:  questi si attivano piu’ avanti.

The Finns’ sense for summer.   Through the short proverb above,  based on the arrivals of migratory birds,  the Finns will tell you exactly when summer is going to start. 

When the Lark comes,  says the proverb,  it is one month to summer;  when the Common Chaffinch  arrives,  it is a half month;  when the White wagtail comes it is almost summer and finally when the Swallow is here,  summer is here too. 

Migratory birds travel to the north in different times depending on the type of food they need,  not on the weather;  larks and chaffinches eat seeds and in march they can find seeds over the ground everywhere.  Wagtails eat grubs and they must wait until the land is ice free to arrive;  swallows eat insects and they cannot come before insects are active.  (Usually larks arrive at the end of march).
